Project: A two-day symposium with the curators of documenta (documenta X, 1997 – documenta 14, 2017) ...

 Subject: How to make an exhibition? How to make a documenta? They present their own concepts in the context of contemporary history. Not an easy task.

Implementation: It is extremely hot. The hall is stuffy. It is difficult to continue working in the afternoons. During the introduction I paint the light and the architecture of the room. Then I focus on the presentations and the content and I paint the words. I translate the performances of the lecturers and the abstract thinking spaces they create.

Findings: Art should be connected to everyday life – the lecturers formulate such claims repeatedly. Meanwhile I paint in the center of life and everyday. But this immediate artistic reponse to the theoretical proposals generates a shift of thinking and isn't easy to understand.

 ... bei dem sie aus der Perspektive der Kuratoren über das Ausstellungsmachen sprechen und ihre eigenen Konzepte im Kontext der Zeitgeschichte darlegen. Keine leichte Aufgabe.

Durchführung: Es ist extrem heiß, die Halle nicht gut durchlüftet. An den Nachmittagen fällt es schwer, weiter zu arbeiten. Während der Einführung male ich das Licht und die Architektur des Raumes. Dann konzentriere ich mich mehr auf Vortrag und Inhalt und male parallel zu den Worten. Ich übersetze die Performance der Personen und die abstrakten Denkräume.

Durch das Projekt erkannt: Die Kunst soll mit Leben und Alltag verbunden sein – Sätze mit solchen Forderungen werden mehrfach von den Vortragenden formuliert. Dazu male ich – mitten im Leben und Alltag. Doch diese umgehende Antwort der Kunst auf die Theorie erzeugt eine Verschiebung im Denken und lässt sich schwer fassen.
